China sale spurs domain name boom - Yahoo! Canada Finance
Domain registrations experience a rapid global growth rate to more than 138 million domain names and a 31 % increase over 2006. According to Verisign, the Top 3 countries with the highest growth rate for their country code top-level-domain extensions are the following:
- China: .cn (402% increase)
- Russia: ru
- South Korea: .kr
The dotCOM registrations have reached an astounding number of over 73 million domain names. China's explosive growth rate has put them in the 5th position behind the top 4 TLD extensions which are the following:.com, .de, .net. & co.uk.
- .com (73 Mln Domain Names)
- .de
- .net
- .co.uk
- .cn
China's Top 5 position is out of 267 global TLD extentions. As the popularity for country codes continues to grow worldwide, so will the popularity of the .US TLD (country code for the United States).

I'm sure the explosive growth will continue as hundreds of people come online in those developing countries. But I'm not sure that this will equate to growth in the .us extension. Americans have been exposed to so much .com domain advertising that we're very .com oriented. Maybe in those other nations the country domain extensions are being promoted or pushed by the government or the local registrars, I don't know.
